Background: diabetes mellitus is a disease that is attributed to the impairment of insulin release or action. One of the factors that may be associated with diabetes mellitus is toothbrushing behavior. Objective: this study analyzed the association between toothbrushing behavior and diabetes mellitus based on the data from Indonesian Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) 2018. Methods: this study was an analytical observational study with cross-sectional design. Samples were 759.561 respondents aged ≥ 10 years old who fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Univariate analysis was conducted by calculating the frequency distribution of toothbrushing behavior, diabetes mellitus, and diabetes mellitus risk factors such as age, sex, sweet foods consumption, sweet drinks consumption, fatty foods consumption, fruits and vegetables consumption, and physical activity. Bivariate analysis was carried out using Chi-Square test, while multivariate analysis was done using multiple logistic regression. Results: 2,50% of the respondents had diabetes mellitus. Toothbrushing behavior was associated with diabetes mellitus (adjusted OR (95% CI) = 1,25 (1,12-1,40); p-value < 0,001) after adjusting for age, sex, sweet foods consumption, sweet drinks consumption, fruits and vegetables consumption, and physical activity. Conclusions: in this study, not performing good toothbrushing behavior was found to increase non-diabetes mellitus occurrence. This finding still needs further study. However, performing good toothbrushing behavior is mandatory. The accumulation of bacterial plaque on the tooth surface for not performing good toothbrushing behavior will stimulate inflammation. Progressive inflammation (periodontitis) can augment the risk of developing diabetes mellitus in the future.
