EFEKTIVITAS EKSTRAK BAWANG PUTIH (Allium sativum) TERHADAP BAKTERI E. coli SECARA In Vitro
Background : Escherichia coli is a normal bacterial flora that can cause many diseases. With the increasing rate of resistance to antibiotics, there is a tendency to use traditional medicine as an alternative medicine. Garlic (Allium sativum) has long been known as a medicinal plant which is proven to contain antibacterial compounds. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of garlic extract against E. coli bacteria in vitro. Method : Experimental in vitro research in the form of Post-test Only Control Group Design. Extraction of garlic was carried out by maceration method using 95% ethanol as solvent which was then evaporated using a rotary evaporator. The garlic extract was tested for antibacterial activity using agar diffusion and dilution methods to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), with ciprofloocacin as a positive control. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26. Results : Garlic extract is divided into four concentrations, 200 mg / ml, 100 mg / ml, 50 mg / ml, and 25 mg / ml. The concentration of 200 mg / ml formed the largest inhibition zone diameter of 11.75 ± 0.75 mm with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 50 mg / ml. The results of data analysis showed that there were differences in the effectiveness of each concentration of garlic extract and ciprofloxacin. Conclusion : Ciprofloxacin has higher effectiveness than garlic extract. Key words : Extract, ethanol, garlic, Allium sativum, Escherichia coli, ciprofloxacin
