ABSTRACT PREVALENCE AND RISK FACTOR ANALYSIS OF THUMB SUCKING AMONG KIDERGARTEN STUDENTS IN PALEMBANG (Muhammad Faishal Zamzami, December 2020, 79 pages) Faculty of Medicine Universitas Sriwijaya Background. Thumb sucking is a repetitive behavior that causes tension in lips and face muscles. In children under the age of 3 years and 6 months, this is common and children normally avoid this activity at the age of 4 years. The thumb sucking habit that persists past the age of 5 years will cause disturbance of the face and finger aesthetics. In addition to the physical effect, thumb sucking often has social consequences, children that has the habit tend to be ignored by the others. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of thumb sucking in kindergarten children in Palembang and to examine the risk factors for them. Methods. The study was analytic observational study with a cross sectional design. Data obtained by filling out a questionnaire to determine the characteristics of children and parents towards the behavior of thumb sucking. Data were obtained from 203 kindergarten children in Palembang who included in the inclusion criteria. Results. The results of this study showed that from 203 research subjects, 24 (11.8%) children with thumb sucking habit. Number of siblings (p = 0.004; OR = 3.868; 95% CI = 1.568 - 9.547), birth order (p = 0.028; OR = 3.360; 95% CI = 1.202 - 9.392), and watching habits (p = 0.01) are the risk factors of thumb sucking. The logistic regression analysis showed that number of siblings (p = 0.041) was the most influential risk factor for thumb sucking. Conclusion. There are 24 children with thumb sucking habit, and the risk factor of thumb sucking is number of siblings, birth order and watching habits.
