PERLAKUAN BENIH UNTUK MENGENDALIKAN VIRUS TANAMAN CABAI (CAPSICUM ANNUUM L.) YANG TERBAWA BENIH
Curly yellow virus disease and virus mosaic are important diseases of chili because they can cause 70-100% yield losses. The disease are transmitted by whitefly vector insects (Bemisia tabaci) and green aphid (Bemisia tabaci). The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of seed treatment on the development of seed-borne viral diseases of chili. In this study, seeds harvested from infected plant were trteated with five different treatments, including control. The seed treatments were warm water treatment, red ginger extract, turmeric extract, java turmeric extract and control. The results showed that there were two virus infections appeard on seedlings emerged from treated seeds. The symptoms were curly yellow and leaf mosaic. There incidence of curly yellow varied among treatments. The highest incidence was found in plots treated with warm water amounted to 14.10%, and the lowest incidence was found in plots treated with red ginger extract, amounted to 1.10%. The incidence of mosaic also varied among treatents with the highest was foun in plots treated with warm water amlouted to 5.15% and the lowest was found in plots treated with turmeric extract amounted to 1.64%. This meants that red ginger extract was able to suppress the infection and development of curly yellow virus, while the treatment with warm water could not suppress the curly yellow virus. For mosaic disease, turmeric extract could suppress the development of viral mosaic. Warm water treatment seemed likely had little effect on curly yellow and mosaic diseases. The transmission of curly yellow virus through seeds is greater than that of viral mosaic disease. Keywords: Curly yellow virus, viral mosaic, disease symptoms
