AN ANALYSIS OF POLITENESS STRATEGIES USED BY STUDENTS AND TEACHER IN ENGLISH CLASS AT SMA NEGERI 1 PASEMAH AIR KERUH

This thesis aimed to describe what kinds of politeness strategy is used by the teacher and what kinds of politeness strategy is used by students in English class. The objects in this research were an English teacher and students of 11A class of SMA Negeri 1 Pasemah Air Keruh. The data were collected through observation and interview. The data were analyzed by using thematic analysis. The results of this observation showed that there are four strategies by the teacher and students in English Class. The four strategies are Bald on-Record, Positive Politeness Strategy, Negative Politeness Strategy, and Off-Record Strategy. There were 47 utterances by the teacher, the data contained 33 utterances from Bald on-Record, 6 utterances from Positive Politeness Strategy, 2 utterances from Negative Politeness Strategy, and 6 data from Off-record strategy. The utterance showed that Bald on-Record became the most used politeness strategy used by the teacher in the study. Meanwhile, there were 9 utterances by the students. There was 1 utterance from Bald on-record strategy, 4 utterances from the Positive politeness strategy, 2 utterances from the Negative politeness strategy, and 2 utterances from the off-record strategy. The utterance showed that Positive Politeness became the most used Politeness Strategy used by the students in the study. The results of the teacher’s interview showed that the teacher used the Bald on-Record strategy in the teaching and learning process. From the students’ interviews, the students used Positive Politeness Strategy in the teaching and learning process. Hence, the data from the interview support the data from observations.
