The changing of times will always provide changes followed by new demands in every aspect of human life, especially in education, which plays important role in advancing a nation. One of the thinking abilities that needs to be mastered in this 21st century era is higher order thinking skills (HOTS), where students are expected to integrate several skills in facing the new demands. The aims of this research are to find out students’ perceptions about HOTS knowledge, students’ levels in answering HOTS questions, correlation between the students’ perceptions and their levels of HOTS in English subject. The data were collected by spreading questionnaire consisted of 30 items and HOTS test consisted of 16 multiple-choice questions. The techniques of analyzing the data used correlational analysis and tested by using SPSS 25.0 program. The results implied that the students’ perceptions on the questionnaire is categorized as high (3.52) and the students’ levels of HOTS is categorized as sufficient (4.64). At the significance level of 0.05 in two-tailed testing with N=130, using Pearson Product-Moment shows that the r-obtained (0.012) is lower than the significance level, which means there is no significant correlation between students perceptions and their levels of HOTS at SMAN 1 Palembang.
