This study aimed to determine the dynamics of communication in the intercultural adaptation process of students from Papua at Sriwijaya University and to find out the barriers that came in terms of the dynamics of communication during the adaptation process of the students to their new environment. The method used in this research was in-depth interviews, documentation and observation. The results showed that Papua students initially thought that Palembang language was complicated, harsh and weird. However Papua students tried to adapt to Palembang language over time. The adaptation process started from self-awareness of the importance of adapting, continued by learning, and finally learning by practicing. In building a stronger intercultural communication relationship, it required positive thinking and the observation of the language, nature and character of Palembang people at the first place. Thus, they could adjust the communication style to the students and the community of Palembang without giving up their real identity and increase the intensity of intercultural communication.
