KEBIJAKAN PRESIDEN NICOLAS MADURO DALAM MENGATASI KRISIS EKONOMI DI VENEZUELA

Currently, Venezuela has been strucking an economic crisis such as hyperinflation, and scarcity of basic commodities, made the country become underdevelop in Latin America due to its slumping economic performance. This occurred due to mismanagement during the Oil Boom phenomenon, when Hugo Chavez was the president or when the oil price was more than $ 100 per barrel, Venezuela received sufficient profits from exporting oil itself, so that the volume of exports is lower which not influence the economy. However, when Nicolas Maduro took office as President of Venezuela, there was an economic downturn in Venezuela such as hyperinflation, rising prices for goods and services, increased violence and crimes that triggered the Venezuelan people to protest. It was not only chaos that occured in Venezuela. However, the pressure from various parties who were dissatisfied with Maduro's performance also had an impact on his legitimacy as president. This study aims to explain why and how President Nicolas Maduro continue to implement of the populist policies in facing the economic crisis in Venezuela. Economically, the efforts made by President Maduro to face the crisis are by sticking to the concept of his welfare state while trying to carry out a left-wing populist policy based on deficit spending (spending is greater than revenue) amid the economic crisis. According to the theory of left-wing populism, the character of the leader in running the government tends to prioritize the welfare of his people and carry out socialist policies through his power. In a review of the economic crisis that occurred, the results of this study to indicate that the efforts made by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in facing the crisis to implement policies that support Venezuelan industry as a source of economic income, provide support from the government to local workers and implement government policies to support the economy of the country itself in order to overcome the crisis that occurred. In spite of that, Nicolas Maduro's reasons for the economic crisis occurred, but he responded that he still carried out the deficit spending policies such as his welfare program including increasing minimum worker wages, increasing employment to carry out the foreign cooperation because Nicolas Maduro wanted to increase the legitimacy of his power in Venezuela and want to maintain the identity of the Venezuelan as a bolivarian state.
