The objective of this research is to analyze the effect of industry concentration on the production efficiency of the basic iron and Steel industry m Indonesia. This research uses quantitative and qualitative technical analysis. The quantitative analysis is using simple regression method whith Eviews 3.0. This research used concentration ratio of output value from the largest 4 firms (CR4) to measure the industry concentration. This research found that the concentration ratio of output value from the largest 4 firms (CR4) is 83.94 percent on an average during 15 years. Based on Bain’s teory it is classified as oligopoly structure. The rate of efficiency in the industry during the period was on average of 0,315. It means in Indonesian basic iron and Steel industry is relatively less efficient. This research also found that the determination coefficient was 0.588112. It means that the concentration ratio can explain 58,81 percent of fluctuations of efficiency, and the rest is explained by an other factors outside of models. Based on t-statistic research with a = 0.05 find that t-statistic is 0.467491 and the t-table is 2,179. In this case t- t-statistic < t-table so Ho hypotesis accepted, and Ha Hypotesis rejected. It can be concluded the there is no significant effect of industry concentration on the basic iron and Steel industry. However, after the inclusion of additional variable consisting of intermediate costs and the number of firm of the industry, it is found that the two variables have significant effect on efficiency. Intermediate cost has negative impact, while the number of firm has positive impact.
