A correlation of functional reading achievement, reading attitude, and reading interest of state junior high school students in Ilir Timur 1, 2 and Kalidoni

The objectives of this study were to find out the students’ reading attitude, reading interest
and functional reading achievements, the correlations among these variables, and the
contribution of reading attitude and reading interest either in each aspect or in total to
functional reading achievement. The reading attitude, reading interest questionaire and
reading achievement test were distributed to 264 students of the seventh, eighth and ninth
grades of state junior high school in Ilir Timur 1, 2 and Kalidoni. The results showed that
the students’ functional reading achievement was in Very Poor category (36.61). The
results of this study were analyzed by using Pearson product moment correlation &
regression analyses in SPSS version 21. Moreover, the correlation analyses showed that
there was negative and no significant correlation between students’ reading attitude and
their functional reading achievement. Besides, there was a significant correlation between
students’ reading interest and students’ functional reading achievement (0.177**).There
were also some significant correlations between the aspects of reading attitude and reading
interest toward functional reading achievement. Based on regression analysis, reading
attitude aspect I read parts of newspaper several times a month gave the highest
contribution towards functional reading achievement (2.3%). Moreover, reading interest
aspect Just headlines gave the highest contribution to functional reading achievement
(10.1%)
