KARAKTERISTIK PASIEN MENINGITIS YANG DIRAWAT DI DEPARTEMEN NEUROLOGI RSUP DR. MUHAMMAD HOESIN PALEMBANG PERIODE 2017-2020
Faculty of Medicine Sriwijaya University Background. Meningitis is a disease that occurs due to inflammation of the protective membrane system of the brain and spinal cord. There are several types of meningitis according to the cause like bacterial meningitis, tuberculous meningitis, viral meningitis, cryptococcal meningitis and others. This study aims to determine the characteristics of meningitis patients treated at the Neurology Department Dr. Muhammad Hoesin Palembang for 2017-2020 period. Method. This research is a descriptive study with a cross-sectional design. This study used secondary data from the medical records of all meningitis patients who were treated at Dr. Muhammad Hoesin Palembang for 2017-2020 period which met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Result. The most common type of meningitis in this study was tuberculous meningitis (48%). Most of the meningitis patients were from the 30-60 year age group (67,3%). Meningitis patients were mostly male (58,7%). As many as 30,4% of meningitis patients did not work. The largest proportion of patients with meningitis education level graduated from junior high school (30,4%). Similar to other studies, the comorbidity, clinical symptoms, and outcome of meningitis patients in this study were predominantly tuberculosis (46%), headache (78%), and living with sequelae (50%), respectively. In contrast to previous studies, the majority of meningitis patients were not infected with HIV (91%) and the most complication in this study was neurological deficits (91%). Conclusion. Characteristics of meningitis patients treated in the neurology department Dr. Muhammad Hoesin Palembang is quite diverse, but mostly dominated by patients aged 30-60 years, male, complete junior high school education level, do not have a job, are not infected with HIV, have tuberculosis comorbidity, have clinical symptoms of headache, have neurologic deficits and has a viable outcome with sequelae.
