ABSTRACT CORRELATION BETWEEN CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND ETIOLOGY ON CYTOLOGICAL EXAMINATION OF PATIENTS WITH PLEURAL EFFUSION AT ANATOMICAL PATHOLOGY DEPARTMENT OF RSUP DR. MOHAMMAD HOESIN PALEMBANG (Natasha Yosefany Marsinta Hutagalung, Medical Faculty of Sriwijaya University) Background: Pleural effusion is an excessive accumulation in the pleural cavity that can be caused by changes in hydrostatic and oncotic pressure in the pulmonary capillaries, increased pleural membrane capillary permeability, and lymphatic obstruction. It is important to know the clinical characteristics of the patient to establish the etiology of pleural effusion. This study aims to determine the relationship between clinical characteristics and etiology on cytological examination of patients with pleural effusion at Anatomical Pathology Department of RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Method: This research method is observational analytic with cross sectional design using secondary data in the form of medical records at Anatomical Pathology Department of RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang as a research subject. Results: A total of 96 samples of the study, the characteristics of pleural effusion patients were mostly found based on age 40 – 59 years was 56 people (58.3%), male gender was 60 people (62.5%), the location of pleural fluid in the right lung was 59 people (61.5%), the color of the pleural fluid was reddish as many as 58 people (60.4%). The etiology of the non-malignant cytology examination of lymphocytic effusion was 27 people (28.1%) and adenocarcinoma malignancy was 17 people (17.7%). There is a significant relationship between age with a P value of 0.042 (p
