Background: Medical students are exposed to academic stressors such as workload and a competitive environment, as well as non-academics such as family, residence member, economic status, personality, and others. The academic stressors experienced between semesters are different. One of the effects of these stressors is depression. This study was conducted to analyze the differences in the degree of depression in the 3rd and 7th semester students of Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sriwijaya, and also to determine the incidence of depression, differences in degrees of depression based on gender, residence member, economic status, and depression therapy. Method: This study used an analytic observational design with a cross sectional approach. The samples of this research were students in semester 3 and semester 7 of Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sriwijaya in the 2020 academic year who met the inclusion criteria. The instruments in this study were the DASS 42 and BDI-II questionnaire. Results: In this study, there were 390 subjects consisting of 191 third semester subjects and 199 seventh semester subjects. The overall incidence of depression was 195 (50%) subjects. The incidence of depression in semester 3 was 93 (49%) subjects and in semester 7 were 102 (51%) subjects. There was no significant difference in the degree of depression based on semester (p = 0.645), gender (p = 0.214), member of residence (p = 0.479), and economic status (p = 0.124). There was a significant difference in the degree of depression based on depression therapy (p = 0.032). Conclusion: There was no difference in the degree of depression between semester 3 and semester 7. Among depressed subjects, there was no difference in the degree of depression based on gender, residence member, economic status, but there were differences in depression therapy.
