Background: Acne vulgaris (AV) is an inflammatory process of pilosebaceous follicles due to presence of Propionibacterium acnes often found in adolescents. Factors affecting AV include psychological stress and sleep quality. Survey stated 83% of adolescents experience stress while 43% have poor sleep quality in which could worsen AV. This study aimed to determine the relationship between stress level and sleep quality with AV severity of students of SMAN 3 Palembang. Method: This study was an observational descriptive study using correlation test with case series approach. Research was conducted at SMAN 3 Palembang from November-December 2020. 50 samples were obtained using purposive sampling technique. The data obtained were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis. Instruments used in this study include classification of AV severity using the LRAG photography technique, Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Result: Students with moderate stress experiencing mild, moderate, and severe acne were respectively 26 (52%), 7 (14%), and 3 (6%). The distribution of students with poor sleep quality experiencing mild, moderate, and severe acne were respectively 24 (48%), 8 (16%), and 3 (6%). There was no student with very severe acne found. Analysis with Somers'd correlation test found no significant relationship between stress level and AV severity (P = 0.645). Analysis with Kendall tau test found no significant relationship between sleep quality and AV severity (P = 0.155). Conclusion: Most of the students of SMAN 3 Palembang experience mild acne with moderate stress and poor sleep quality. There was no significant relationship between stress levels and sleep quality with the severity of AV among students of SMAN3 Palembang.
