Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is defined as a mononeuropathy caused by compression of the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel. Many predisposing factors are associated with the incidence of CTS including age, gender, obesity, smoking habits and a history of certain diseases and occupations involving repetitive wrist movements. Symptoms of CTS can interfere with the patient's daily activities plus CTS has a high incidence and can occur in various population groups. There are various studies that report on the characteristics of CTS patients, but there are several variables with conflicting results from one study to another. Therefore, this study aims to explore the profile of people with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), especially RSMH Palembang. Methods: This study is a descriptive study using primary data obtained from interviews with patients diagnosed with CTS. The research was conducted at the ENMG Laboratory of the RSMH Palembang. Results: There were 24 patients who met the inclusion criteria, 22 (91.7%) of whom were women and 2 (8.3%) were male. The largest age group was 51-60 years (41.7%) and at smallest was ≤40 years (4.2%) with a mean age of 52.6 ± 1.7 years. The degree of CTS was measured using a symptom severity scale and the results obtained were 15 (62.5%) moderate, 8 (33.3%) mild degrees, and only 1 (4.2%) severe. Most of them work as housewives (58.3%) with a repetitive wrist movement frequency ≥30 times/minute (58.3%). The mean onset of CTS was 13 months. Half (50%) of all subjects had BMI >25kg/m2. Only 8 people (33.3%) had comorbidities with the most common disease being hypertension. Other comorbidities encountered are diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritis, and wrist trauma. The most common symptoms were tingling (91.7%) and pain (75%). Only a handful of people (12.5%) reported weakness. Positive flick sign was found in 70.8% of sufferers. Conclusion: Patients with CTS are dominated by women, aged 51-60 years, have BMI over 25kg/m2, and work as housewives with jobs that involve repetitive wrist movements ≥30 times/minute. Almost all subjects experience tingling sensation and most of them have moderate CTS with hypertension as the most common comorbid disease.
