HUBUNGAN TINGKAT PENGETAHUAN TERHADAP SIKAP DAN TINDAKAN PENCEGAHAN THALASSEMIA PADA MAHASISWA PROGRAM STUDI PENDIDIKAN DOKTER FAKULTAS KEDOKTERAN UNIVERSITAS SRIWIJAYA
Background: Thalassemia is hemolytic anemia caused by disruption of hemoglobin formation in erythrocytes. The percentage of carriers alpha thalassemia Indonesia is estimated to be around 1-10% and beta-thalassemia is 3.7%, with the spread in Java of 3.4%, Palembang 7%, and in Makassar 8% of the total population of Indonesia. By increasing the awareness of medical students on the prevention of thalassemia, it is hoped that it can form doctors who can provide good education to prevent thalassemia. This study aims to determine the relationship between the level of knowledge and attitudes and preventive measures of thalassemia in students of the Medical Education Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University. Method: This research was an observational descriptive-analytic study with a cross-sectional study design. This research was conducted at the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University, Palembang, Indonesia. Obtained a total sample of 180 students who meet the inclusion, exclusion, and drop-out criteria. Data were collected through a questionnaire google form and then analyzed using the chi-square test. Results: The results of the univariate analysis showed that the majority of respondents were female (72.9%), came from the 2018 class (33.9%), ethnic Palembang (40.6%), and did not have a history of inbreeding in the family (95.6%). In this study, there were71.7% of students with good knowledge, 77.8% of students with a positive attitude, and 71.1% of students with good action against thalassemia prevention. The results of the bivariate analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between the level of knowledge about thalassemia and thalassemia prevention attitudes (p = 0.000) and there was a significant relationship between the level of knowledge about thalassemia and thalassemia prevention measures (p = 0.000). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between the level of knowledge about thalassemia with attitudes and actions to prevent thalassemia.
