Functional reading achievement, attitude toward, and interest in reading of state junior high school students in sako and sematang borang districts palembang
The aims of the study were to find out: the functional reading achievement (FRA) of
state junior high school student in Sako and Sematang Borang Districts Palembang;
whether or not there was a significant difference in grades of FRA, whether or not there
was a between junior high school students‘ functional reading achievement according to
gender significant correlations among reading attitude, reading interest, and FRA, a
significant correlation between each item of reading attitude and reading interest to FRA,
significant contributions ofreading attitude andinterest to FRA, which aspect of reading
attitude and interest that gave the biggest contribution to FRA. To collect the data, FRA
Test and Attitude Toward and Interest in Reading Literacy questionnaire were distributed
to 213 students. The data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation,
Stepwise Multiple Regression and Independent Sample t-test. The result showed that the
students‘ FRA was very poor (21.6), and there was no significant difference among
students‘ FRA in grades. The correlation analyses found that the significant correlation
did not exist among reading attitude, reading interest and FRA(total). However, there were
6 aspects of reading interest correlated significantly to FRA, but only 3 of them had
significant contributions to FRA in which comic strips gave the biggest contributionto
FRA.
