Plato's Republic is probably the most celebrated piece of philosophy ever written. And although it describes a society wich looks to some like the ideal human community and to others like a totalitarian nightmare, in the course of his description Plato raises all the enduring questions about politics, art, education and the general conduct of life which continue to trouble us.
