Improving the Descriptive Writing Achievement of the Eighth Graders of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang through Semantic Webbing
The objectives of this study were to find out whether or not there was any significant
difference in descriptive writing achievement between the students who were taught using
semantic webbing technique and those who were not and to find out the students’ perception on
the use of semantic webbing. Semantic webbing is a diagram to make the students writing
descriptive text easily. It is a technique to improve the descriptive writing achievement of the
eighth graders of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang. The population was the eighth graders of
SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang in the academic year of 2012/2013 with the total number of
160 students. There were 80 students as the sample by using purposive sampling. The method of
the study was a quasi-experimental method. These students were divided into two groups; the
experimental group, which was taught descriptive writing achievement using semantic webbing,
and control group, which was not taught. Each group consisted of 40 students. In collecting the
data, this research used a test and a questionnaire. The tests were pre-test and post-test. The result
of the tests was calculated by two raters and analyzed by using t-test through the statistical
package for social sciences (SPSS) version 20 for windows. The results of the study showed that
there was significant difference in the descriptive writing achievement of the students who were
taught using semantic webbing and those who were not. Then, the result of the student after
giving treatment was higher than the result of the students before giving treatment. The value of
t-obtained was 11.070 at the significance level p < 0.05 in two tailed testing and df 65, the critical
value of t-table was 1.997. Since the value of t-obtained was higher than t-table, the null
hypotheses were rejected and the research hypotheses were accepted. In other words, there was a
significant difference in writing achievement of the students who were taught using semantic
webbing and those who were not. The results of the questionnaire showed that the students gave
positive response towards the use of semantic webbing in improving their writing descriptive text
