This study was aimed at finding out: (1) whether or not Frayer model
strategy is effective to improve students’ reading comprehension of
expository text, (2) whether or not K-W-L strategy is effective to
improve students’ reading comprehension of expository text, and (3)
whether or not there is a significant difference in reading comprehension
of expository text of the eleventh grade students between those who are
taught by using Frayer model strategy and those who are taught by using
K-W-L strategy. This study was conducted by using Pure Comparative
design with two experimental groups. The population of this study was
all of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 TanjungBatu in
academic year 2013/2014 with the total number 174 students. Sixty four
of them were taken as the sample by using purposive sampling. There
were two experimental groups for this study. The first experimental
group was taught by using Frayer model strategy and the experimental
group 2 was taught by using K-W-L strategy. Both groups were given
pretest and posttest in reading comprehension. The data gained from the
test was analyzing using paired sample t-test and independent sample ttest. The calculation was done by using SPSS version 21.0. The result
showed that the two strategies were effective to improve students’
reading comprehension of expository text. However, when the
achievements of both groups were compared, it was found that the
experimental group 1 got the high the average score (EG1: 74.02; EG2:
72.89). This means Frayer model strategy was more effective compared
to K-W-L strategy in improving the eleventh grade students’ reading
comprehension of expository text of SMA Negeri 1 TanjungBatu.
