An analysis of the first year students’ errors of preposition in writing short-answer test responses of SMPN 1 Palembang
The objectives of this study were (1) to find out the kind of errors of prepositions did the first year students of SMPN 1 Palembang have in writing short-answer test responses, ( 2 ) to find out some possible causes of the errors of preposition did the first year students of SMPN 1 Palembang have in writing short-answer test responses . A descriptive method was used in this study. The population were 241 students of the first year students of SMPN 1 Palembang. The samples were 40 students that were randomly taken from the first-year students of SMPN 1 Palembang in academic year 2012/2013. The data were obtained by means of test and questionnaire. The result of the test and questionnaire were analyzed by means of percentage method. From the result of the data analysis, the writer concluded that (1) the first-year students of SMPN 1 Palembang made many errors in the use of preoposition, namely (a) 39.2% errors on prepositions of time and (b) 35.8% errors on prepositions of place. There are two possible causes of the errors in the use of prepositions; (a) the students did not get the specific time and lesson to learn the preposition, so they did not know well the usage and differences among the prepositions. (b) the books that the students learned and got from the goverment were not good enough because they did not have any description of prepositions, the books just have the headline and little bit explanation
