Geothermal manifestation fluid and heat source characterization are key considerations in feasibility study step towards the utilization of geothermal resource. The confluention of Eurasian and Indo-Australian plates along the southwestern edge of Sumatra formed Bukit Barisan as an orogenic belt, which contains geothermal manifestations. Lake Ranau is formed as a remnant of the ancient Mount Ranau's volcanic activity, which also configurates a post-caldera stratovolcano Mount Seminung on the southeast part of the study area. This research was done in Ranau Lake area, South Ogan Komering Ulu Regency, South Sumatra Province with significant geothermal potential. The research aims to determine the characteristics of the manifested fluids and estimate the subsurface temperature of the geothermal system using geochemical methods.Geologically, the study area is situated on Young Volcanic Rocks Formation (Qhvs), composed of pyroclastic rocks from Mount Seminung such as andesitic fragmented breccia and lapilli tuffs. This research utilizes geoindicator and geothermometer method using geochemistry composition data analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS) in a laboratory. The analysis results are then calculated using chemical geoindicator equations (Cl-SO4-HCO3, Cl-Li-B, and Na-K-Mg) and chemical geothermometers (K/Mg, SiO2, and Na-K).The Cl-SO4-HCO3 geoindicator result indicates that the manifested fluid is classified as immature water. The Cl-Li-B geoindicator suggests that the geothermal manifestation fluid is in Li loss or B and Cl absorption category. The Na-K-Mg geoindicator indicates the fluid is in immature equillibrium condition.Estimated temperatures of the geothermal system in the study area calculated using the K-Mg chemical geothermometer is estimated to be ranged at 70.9-86.3°C The no-steam loss silica geothermometer estimates a temperature range of 177.0-184.0°C, the max-steam loss silica geothermometer estimates a range of 165.7-171.5°C, and the Na/K geothermometer estimates a range of 242.7-274.9°C. The tentative subsurface model is then constructed referring to the results of estimated subsurface temperature of the geothermal system. The model shows that the manifestation system in all sampling locations is on the outflow zone.
