PENGARUH INTERVENSI SENAM OTAK TERHADAP PERUBAHAN FUNGSI KOGNITIF PADA LANSIA
The global increase in life expectancy, including in Indonesia, has led to a growing elderly population, often accompanied by cognitive decline. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a modified Brain Gym intervention in improving cognitive function among elderly residents of nursing homes. The study utilized a non-randomized experimental design with a pretest-posttest and control group. A total of 30 participants aged ≥60 years were recruited, with 15 assigned to the intervention group and 15 to the control group. Cognitive function was assessed using the Indonesian version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-Ina). The intervention group underwent an 8-session Brain Gym program, while the control group engaged in conventional physical exercises. Baseline MoCA-Ina scores showed significant differences between the groups (p = 0.011), with higher scores in the intervention group. Post-intervention analysis using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test revealed significant improvements in the intervention group's overall MoCA-Ina scores (median change from 20 to 22, p = 0.003) and in the orientation domain (p = 0.034), while no significant changes were observed in the control group. Effect size analysis highlighted the substantial impact of Brain Gym on global cognition and orientation. These findings indicate that modified Brain Gym is a feasible non-pharmacological intervention with promising benefits for enhancing cognitive function in the elderly. Further research is needed to validate these results and broaden its applicability to diverse elderly populations.
