THE USE OF ENGLISH SUBTITLES ON NETFLIX FOR LEARNING ENGLISH: PERCEPTIONS OF ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM STUDENTS AT SRIWIJAYA UNIVERSITY
This study explores students’ perceptions of using English subtitles on Netflix as a language learning strategy. It investigates how subtitles enhance English skills, the challenges faced, and suggestions for improvement. Using a mixed-method design, data were collected from 41 sixth-semester students of the English Education Study Program at Sriwijaya University through questionnaires containing both close- and open-ended questions. The quantitative data were analyzed descriptively, while qualitative responses were thematically analyzed. The results show that students find English subtitles helpful for improving vocabulary, listening, pronunciation, grammar, and understanding authentic language. However, they also experience challenges such as unfamiliar vocabulary, fast subtitle speed, and divided attention. Students use subtitles both for learning and entertainment. They suggest selecting suitable content and integrating short Netflix clips as an effective and enjoyable tool that supports engagement, autonomy, and long-term English learning
