EFEKTIVITAS ANTIJAMUR KITOSAN CANGKANG KEPITING BAKAU (Scylla serrata) TERHADAP Candida albicans
Background: Candida albicans is a normal flora that can become a pathogenic organism causing oral candidiasis. Mangrove crab (Scylla serrata) shells can be utilized as a raw material for chitosan production. Chitosan has potential as a natural antifungal agent effective in inhibiting fungal growth. Objective: This study aimed to determine the antifungal effectiveness of chitosan derived from mangrove crab (Scylla serrata) shells against Candida albicans. Methods: This research was an in vitro laboratory experimental study. The treatment groups consisted of chitosan concentrations of 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% with nystatin as a negativecontrol. All groups were tested for antifungal activity against Candida albicans using the disk diffusion method, with four repititions for each treatment. The inhibition zone diameter was measured using a caliper in millimeters. Result: The inhibition zone increased up to the 15% chitosan concentration, with a diameter of 10,87 mm. however, at the 20% concentration, the inhibitin zone decreased to 6,87 mm. Conclusion: Chitosan from mangrove crab (Scylla serrata) shells at concentrations of 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% showed antifungal activity against Candida albicans.
