PERAN WORLD WIDE FUND FOR NATURE DALAM MELINDUNGI GAJAH DI SUMATERA
Indonesia, as a tropical archipelagic country situated between Asia and Australia and flanked by the Indian and Pacific Oceans, is endowed with a rich biodiversity due to its geographical location and numerous islands, comprising over 17,000. Among its diverse ecosystems, the forests of Indonesia serve as a habitat for large mammals such as elephants, specifically the Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) and Bornean elephant (Elephas maximus borneensis). The Sumatran elephant, a keystone species, plays a crucial role in seed dispersal and ecological balance. However, this subspecies is critically endangered, with its population declining significantly due to habitat loss from deforestation, illegal poaching for ivory, and human-elephant conflicts. Recent studies indicate that the Sumatran elephant has lost approximately 70% of its habitat over the last 40 years, leading to a staggering population decline of over 50%. Given these pressing issues, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has been actively involved in conservation efforts for the Sumatran elephant, emphasizing the need for a collaborative approach involving government, private sectors, and civil society. Sumatran elephants face serious threats to their habitat due to deforestation caused by the expansion of oil palm plantations, logging, and conversion of land to agricultural areas. The resulting habitat fragmentation has a direct impact on the elephant's lifestyle and movement patterns, making it a critically endangered species according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The significant decline in the Sumatran elephant population has resulted from habitat loss and increased conflict with humans. Various conservation initiatives have been implemented, including the establishment of protected areas, rehabilitation programs for affected elephants, and efforts to reduce human-elephant conflict.Cooperation between conservation organizations and the Indonesian government is crucial in protecting Sumatran elephant habitat and raising public awareness about the importance of conserving this species.
