DAYA ANTIBAKTERI PASTA GIGI EKSTRAK GAMBIR (Uncaria gambir Roxb) KOMBINASI XYLITOL TERHADAP BAKTERI Streptococcus mutans
Streptococcus mutans is the primary bacterium responsible for dental caries through the formation of dental plaque. Chemical plaque control can be achieved by brushing teeth with toothpaste containing antibacterial agents. The combination of xylitol and gambir extract has been proven to inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans and shows potential as an active ingredient in toothpaste formulation. Objective: The objective of this study is to assess the antibacterial effect of toothpaste formulated with gambir extract and xylitol against Streptococcus mutans. Methods: This study employed an in vitro laboratory experimental design using a post-test only control group approach. The antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans was tested using the well diffusion method with 4 toothpaste and 6 replications for each treatment group, which included gambir toothpaste, xylitol toothpaste, gambir-xylitol combination toothpaste, and placebo toothpaste. Results: Toothpaste containing a combination of xylitol and gambir extract has the highest effectiveness in inhibiting bacterial growth, with an average diameter of the inhibition zone of 22.88 mm. Conclusion: Toothpaste containing a combination of xylitol and gambir extract exhibits antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans.
