The incidence of overweight is closely related to adolescents, because at this age adolescents are still experiencing a phase of growth and hormonal changes so that changes in body weight in adolescents are very common. The incidence of overweight in adolescents does not occur suddenly, but rather results several factors such as nutrition knowledge, food intake, genetics, low physical activity, psychology, environmental factors, gender and socioeconomic level. The general objective of the study was to determine the relationship between nutrition knowledge and food intake and the incidence of overweight in adolescents at SMP Negeri 19 Palembang. This study is a quantitive study with a cross-sectional research design. Respondents in this study were 110 students taken using purposive sampling. Data were processed with statistical tests and analyzed univariately and bivariately. The results of the analysis stated that 65.5% of respondents experienced overweight, 62.7% had low nutrition knowledge, 88.2% had high energy intake, 50.9% had high carbohydrate intake, 92.7% had high protein intake, and 84.5% had high fat intake. There was no significant relationship between nutrition knowledge (p = 0.629), energy intake (p = 0.763), carbohydrate intake (p = 0.08), protein intake (p = 0.712), and fat intake (p = 0.628) and the incidence of overweight in adolescents at SMP Negeri 19 Palembang. The conclusion of this study is that overweight does not only occur among respondents with high energy, carbohydrate, protein and fat intake, but also among those with adequate levels of nutrient intake. These findings suggest that the occurrence of overweight cannot be assessed solely based on dietary intake over a three-day period. It is advisable for students to consume food in accordance with their daily nutritional requirements.
