BACKGROUND: In pulmonary tuberculosis, there is an ineffective breathing pattern disorder caused by the obstruction of breathing efforts that can be overcome by the administration of pursed lips breathing therapy. One of the impacts caused by the pulmonary tuberculosis is that the breathing pattern becomes ineffective; therefore, nursing measures are needed to overcome the problem. The actions given are in the form of collaboration in giving analgesics combined with the nonpharmacological therapy, one of which is Pursed Lips Breathing. Objective: to apply the nursing care to pulmonary tuberculosis patients who have ineffective breathing pattern nursing problems by providing them pursed lips breathing therapy. Method: A case study method was conducted on the three patients by applying the pursed lips breathing to the patients' breathing pattern for 3 days of treatment to describe their breathing frequency. Results: There were 5 nursing problems established in the pulmonary tuberculosis patients and the main nursing problem was the ineffective breathing patterns. Discussion: Performing pursed lips breathing therapy can reduce breathing patterns because it has an effect of relaxing the bronchi to facilitate the breathing, providing benefits of improving the respiratory status of the patients having the respiratory system disorders and lung function, as well decreasing the frequency of breathing to improve it. Conclusion: The administration of pursed lips breathing therapy is effective in overcoming the breathing patterns suffered by the pulmonary tuberculosis patients.
