Indonesia is the world’s largest nickel producer with production of 1,6 million metric tons in 2022 (48,48% of global production) and reserves of 17,7 billion tons of ore or 177,8 million tons of metal. Most of the nickel laterite is found in the eastern is spread across Southeast Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Maluku, North Maluku, Papua, and West Papua. PT Mineral Alam Abadi (MAA) Group has two subsidiaries under one IUP in Laroenai Village, Morowali, namely PT Bima Cakra Perkasa MIneralindo (BIMA) and PT Mitra Mineral Perkasa (MMP). To maintain production and quality stability, MAA implements a pit optimization strategy to improve sustainable mining efficiency. This study redesigned the nickel laterite open pit mine with optimization using Geovia Whittle 4.7 software in the West (CoG 1.1) and East (CoG 2.2) blocks. The optimization result show that the West block reserves are 8,272,832 tons with an elevation of 375-545 meters above sea level, while the East block is 2,769,360 tons at an elevation of 293-580 meters above sea level. Mining scheduling uses the best case, starting from the highest elevation by considering technical and economic factors. The ultimate pit limit design was prepared based on optimization results andgeotechnical recommendations, with slope geometry: 2 m wide berm, 3 m high, 55° single slope, and 4 m intermediate berm every 12 m bench. The results of the economic analysis showed NPV of the West block wasa USD 32,981,987 with an IRR of 94,82%, while the East block generated an NPV of USD 6,336,304 with an IRR of 45,61%. The maximum procustion life obtained from both blocks reached 10 years. This study shows that the application of pit optimization can improve the efficiency of nickel laterite mine planning while generating high economic value while taking into account geotechnical and sustainability aspects.
