Preeclampsia is hypertension in pregnancy with a systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg or a diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg on two separate tests taken 4 hours apart at a gestational age of more than 20 weeks accompanied by new-onset proteinuria. Preeclampsia can worsen with severe features which may lead to seizure (eclampsia). Magnesium sulfate is used in preeclampsia with severe features as a seizure prophylaxis which is considered more effective and does not have serious effects on neonatal. This aim of this study is to determine the drug utilization of magnesium sulfate in pregnant women with preeclampsia at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. This study was a descriptive research on drug utilization conducted at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang from August to September 2024. Sampling was performed using total sampling of medical record data based on the inclusion criteria of 45 samples. Data were processed using SPSS version 27.0 for MacOS. Data analysis was conducted using univariate analysis and presented in the form of frequency distribution. The prevalence of pregnant women patient with preeclampsia at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang was 77,46%. Among 45 patients, the characteristics were as follows all had preeclampsia with severe features (100%), housewives (68,9%), multipara (55,5%), multigravida (80%) and gestational age ≥34 weeks (71,1%). The drug utilization pattern of magnesium sulfate in the sample met appropriate indication (100%), appropriate dosage regimen (100%), appropriate duration of administration (100%), appropriate drug interaction (100%) and absence of contraindications (100%). The use of magnesium sulfate in pregnant women patient with preeclampsia at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang is rational based on rational drug use criteria.
