The increasing population of motorized vehicles has caused air pollution in ambient (outdoor) or indoor environments. Sometimes, Indoor air pollution (IAP) is more crucial than ambient air quality since many people spend their time mostly inside buildings. Many studies have been conducted to control the IAP, such as by improving the airflow, which provides adequate air supply and avoids air pollutants trapped and accumulated inside the building. However, the study of emission dispersion inside enclosed parking lots and its impact on Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is still rarely discussed. The IAP could be controlled by installing mechanical ventilation devices (either exhaust fan or jet fan) to circulate fresh air and dilute it with air pollutants. Exhaust fans are commonly installed on the wall to remove the polluted air from enclosed parking lots. This method will maintain the IAQ but can not eliminate the emission dispersion inside the room. In this study, the author has another solution to eliminate the emission dispersion by taking the emission as close as possible to the emission source (the vehicle's tailpipe). So, the secondary exhaust fan needs to be added close to the tailpipe and could be installed integrated with a “Wheel Stopper,” which is already regulated by the government and has to be installed in the parking garage. In order to take out the polluted air from the secondary exhaust fan, the author designed a new wheel stopper with some holes to absorb the polluted air. The wheel stopper is made from a steel pipe with a height of 10 cm, which already fulfills the requirements. In order to investigate the performance of the wheel stopper, it will conduct several CFD simulations in a simple parking garage with maximum capacity of six cars. The parking lots have two exhaust fans: the primary exhaust fan (installed on the wall with a height of 2.5 m from the floor) and the secondary exhaust fan (installed integrated with the wheel stopper). A total of 6 Air Change hours (ACH) of fresh air circulates inside the parking lots with percentages of secondary exhaust fan adjusted to be 5, 10, and 15 %. The research is conducted using two basic methods: a simulation of emission dispersion (evaluating the position of the main exhaust fan and the effects of the secondary exhaust fan) and an experimental (measuring the CO concentration due to cold-start emission, with natural ventilation, and in steady state inside the parking garage). This study focuses on the breath levels of 0.7 m, 1.1 m, and 1.5 height, which are the levels people (infants, kids, and adults) commonly take a breath. The IAP is evaluated by predicting/measuring the concentration of air pollutants (Carbon Monoxide and Nitrogen Dioxide) and then compared to the environmental threshold value. Based on the result, the Exhaust fan on Position of A (near to parking area/Emission source) brings the best performance due to less polluted area impacted by the emission dispersion. However, the exhaust fan installed on this position also brings other weakness that cause the air pollutants to concentrate more on the parking area. Installing a secondary exhaust fan (integrated with a wheel stopper) can solve the problem by providing more health. Based on the measurement, it can reduce the concentration of CO by more than 20 % on a breath level of 1.5 m (breath level of adults).
