ANALISA KELAYAKAN TEMPER BEAD WELDING UNTUK MENGGANTIKAN POST WELD HEAT TREATMENT PADA PENGELASAN A335 GRADE P22
This study evaluates the feasibility of temper bead welding (half bead technique) as an alternative to post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) in influencing the microstructure and mechanical properties of A335 Grade P22 pipe welding. It compares three welding methods: pre-heat, pre-heat TBW, and pre-heat PWHT, based on WPS and PQR standards. Tensile tests on 12 specimens showed failures in the base metal across all methods, with ductile fracture morphology and elongation of 13–18%. Tensile strength ranged from 587–636 N/mm² for pre-heat, 588–611 N/mm² for pre-heat TBW, and 497–564 N/mm² for pre-heat PWHT. Microstructural analysis revealed ferrite dominance with some pearlite in the base metal, while the HAZ, fusion zone, and weld metal were predominantly pearlite with minor ferrite. Hardness tests showed consistent base metal hardness, with the HAZ showing the highest values for pre-heat (302–342 HV), slightly lower for pre-heat TBW (287–328 HV), and significantly reduced for pre-heat PWHT (183–188 HV). While TBW offers a practical, cost-effective alternative to PWHT, it is more suited for repair welding due to incomplete application in root, hot, and capping passes, making it less ideal for general fabrication processes.
