Oropharyngeal dysphagia is a swallowing disorder commonly observed in geriatric patients due to physiological decline or underlying diseases. FEES (Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing) is performed to evaluate swallowing function and its interaction with the airway. This study aims to determine the characteristics of FEES examination results in geriatric patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia in the ENT-HNS Department of Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. This observational descriptive study utilized medical records of geriatric patients who underwent FEES examinations in the ENT-HNS Department of Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang, during the 2021-2023 period. The study included a total of 62 patients. The majority of geriatric patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia who underwent FEES examination were found in the 60-69 years age group (64.5%), male (74.2%), experienced dysphagia in oropharyngeal phase (79%), and primarily caused by neurogenic disorders (54.8%). Oromotor function assessments most commonly revealed adequate oral hygiene (69.4%), weak lip strength (35.5%), symmetrical tongue position (77.4%), adequate tongue movement (50%), adequate tongue strength (37.1%), and absence of tongue fasciculations (58.1%). FEES findings most frequently included leakage with filtered purée (35.5%), penetration with filtered puree (53.2%), aspiration with water (25.8%), and residue with filtered purée (82.3%). Oropharyngeal dysphagia in geriatric patients who underwent FEES examinations was most frequently observed in the 60–69 age group, male, during oropharyngeal phase, and primarily caused by neurogenic disorders. Oromotor function assessments predominantly revealed adequate oral hygiene, weak lip strength, symmetrical tongue position, adequate tongue movement and strength, and absence of tongue fasciculations.
