AISI 1045 steel is a carbon steel with a carbon content composition of 0.42-0.50%, classified as medium carbon steel. (medium carbon steel). In the constraints that occur in the field, machine elements made from AISI 1045 carbon steel cannot avoid damage, resulting in operational failures. The damage that often occurs can include cracks and fractures due to frictional loads during operation, as well as wear that can affect performance. Heat treatment is a method of altering the mechanical properties of a material to meet the desired specifications. Quenching is a heat treatment process aimed at increasing the hardness of AISI 1045 steel. The cooling medium used in this quenching process research is SAE 40 lubricating oil. The research method used is an experimental method using 4 specimens with variations in oil volume of 200 ml, 300 ml, and 500 ml, and without treatment heated in a furnace at a temperature of 850 ◦C. Next, the hardness will be tested using the Vickers hardness test method. From the test results, the hardness value of the untreated specimen was 228.484 kgf/mm², while the highest hardness value for the quenched specimen was found in the 500 ml oil volume variation, with an average hardness value of 316.826 kgf/mm². It can be concluded that the quenching process with varying oil volumes affects the increase in hardness value. The higher the volume of oil used, the higher the hardness value.
