This research examines the externalities of the existence of PT. Duta Alam Sumatra on the socio-economic conditions of the community in Payo Village, West Merapi District, Lahat Regency. This research aims to determine the socio-economic conditions of the community before coal mining and the externalities caused by the coal mining activities of PT. Duta Alam Sumatera (DAS) in Payo Village. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with a phenomenological research strategy. This research uses the theory of social change put forward by Piotr Sztompka. The research results show that the existence of PT. Duta Alam Sumatera in Payo Village causes changes in the socio-economic conditions of the community and gives rise to positive externalities in the form of employment, increased income, business opportunities, public facilities and also gives rise to negative externalities in the form of reduced social interaction, environmental pollution, economic dependence.
