ANALISIS KARAKTERISTIK KEKUATAN TARIK TERHADAP EDIBLE FILM BERBAHAN DASAR EKSTRAK KARAGENAN Kappaphycus alvarezii DENGAN PENAMBAHAN GLISEROL
Conventional plastic as food packaging is difficult to decompose for hundreds of years. Carrageenan-based edible film from Kappaphycus alvarezii is a transparent and safe biodegradable alternative. This study aims to identify the effect of glycerol on the tensile strength, thickness, and morphology of edible films, as well as to examine the optimal concentration of glycerol. The film is made using carrageenan extract from K. alvarezii plus glycerol with concentrations of 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, and 0.8% (v/v). The tests include tensile strength and break elongation using universal test equipment, film thickness with a digital micrometer, and film surface characterization through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The result of the optimal glycerol concentration of strong, thin, and clear edible films meets Japanese Industrial Standard for thickness and tensile strength, although it does not meet the minimum elongation. SEM analysis shows a dense and uniform film structure, without large cracks. This research provides a technical basis for the use of local sources for environmentally friendly food packaging alternatives
