REPRESENTASI KECANTIKAN DALAM FILM (ANALISIS SEMIOTIKA MAKNA “CANTIK” DALAM SERIAL FILM INDUK GAJAH PADA EPISODE 1,2,3 dan 4)
The phenomenon of narrow and often unrealistic beauty standards is still widely found in media representations, including films. The media often displays images of ideal women as slim, fair-skinned, and attractive figures according to certain social norms. This kind of representation creates social pressure on women who do not meet these standards and has the potential to cause insecurity. The Induk Gajah film series is interesting to analyze because it presents a large-bodied female main character who does not conform to conventional beauty standards, but still appears as a strong central character and has complex emotions and a deep story. This study aims to analyze how the representation of beauty in the Induk Gajah series is constructed through John Fiske's semiotic approach. This study uses a qualitative method with semiotic analysis based on three levels of meaning, namely reality, representation, and ideology. The results of the study show that this series consciously depicts the social construction of beauty that is not solely based on physical appearance, but also raises issues of self-acceptance, social pressure, and the importance of seeing beauty from a broader perspective. The series also critiques mainstream beauty standards and shows how the main character builds her self-image amidst the existing stigma. This research is expected to contribute to enriching media communication studies, especially in terms of the representation of women and beauty in films, as well as encouraging the creation of more inclusive representation in the entertainment industry in Indonesia.
