The practice of open waste burning continues to occur within the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Sriwijaya University Indralaya, despite the campus promoting sustainability values, national regulations prohibiting burning without emission control technology, and the university’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This study aims to understand the awareness and reactions of the academic community toward this practice by examining how knowledge, self-reflection, and responses are shaped within campus life. The research adopts a qualitative case study approach through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving six informants representing structural, operational, and student elements. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles, Huberman & Saldaña model, guided by Amos Neolaka’s concept of environmental awareness, which emphasizes the dimensions of knowledge and self-reflection, and Elizabeth Shove’s theory of social practice, which explains the interrelation between materials, competences, and meanings in shaping practices. The findings show that some members of the academic community understand the negative impacts of open burning and demonstrate critical reflection. However, the practice continues due to limited facilities, weak waste management systems, and the perception that burning is the most practical solution. In conclusion, transforming the campus into a sustainable environment requires collective awareness, supportive policies, adequate facilities, and a shift in values regarding waste management.
