The aim of this study is to determine the role of emotional intelligence on mental toughness among football players in South Sumatra. The hypothesis of this study is that there is a significant role of emotional intelligence on mental toughness. In this study, the population consisted of football players in South Sumatra. The sample in this study was 170 football players in South Sumatra. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The measurement instruments used were a scale based on the aspects of mental toughness by Gucciardi (2009) and an emotional intelligence scale based on the aspects by Goleman (2006). The data analysis in this study employed simple linear regression.”. The results showed that the R square value for the role of emotional intelligence on mental toughness was 0.662, with an F value of 329.490 and a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). This indicates that emotional intelligence has a significant role in mental toughness. Therefore, the hypothesis proposed in this study is accepted. The contribution of emotional intelligence to mental toughness is 66.2.
