The European Union's Renewable Energy Directive (RED) policy has encouraged Indonesia to seek new markets for its Crude Palm Oil (CPO) exports. While the EU claims this policy is intended to protect the environment, a World Trade Organization (WTO) ruling declared the implementation of RED II to be discriminatory. In response, Indonesia successfully filed a WTO challenge to the EU's policy and began directing CPO exports to South Asian markets, making India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh increasingly important markets. This was driven by the lack of palm oil production in these countries and reinforced by various preferential trade agreements such as the IP-PTA, AIFTA, and PTA-D8. Indonesia's market expansion strategy is based on the Internationalization Theory. Indonesia uses Foreign Entry Modes, particularly the Resource Complementary approach, which means Indonesia not only sells CPO but also provides technical support to partner countries such as Pakistan to improve their own palm oil cultivation. The role of the state is crucial; the Indonesian government acts as a strategic driver by implementing supportive and protective policies through active diplomacy and addressing legal challenges. Furthermore, comprehensive marketing management, focusing on product quality, competitive pricing, effective distribution, and extensive promotion, is key to ensuring Indonesian CPO remains competitive in the global market. While Indonesia's market expansion strategy and legal victories have proven successful, challenges persist, such as fluctuating global palm oil prices, intense competition from other vegetable oils, and unpredictable regional political situations. Indonesia must also continually adapt to evolving sustainability standards and adjust domestic policies. Indonesia's success in expanding CPO exports to South Asia is a clear example of a robust and adaptable approach to international trade, characterized by intelligent government intervention, collaboration with diverse partners, and a comprehensive market perspective, to ensure long-term economic prosperity amidst complex global dynamics.
