ANALISIS STRUKTUR MIKRO DAN KEKERASAN HASIL PENGELASAN SHIELDED METAL ARC WELDING (SMAW) DENGAN VARIASI KECEPATAN POLISHING TERHADAP LOGAM STAINLESS STEEL 304
This study aims to determine the effect of polishing speed and time on the microstructure and hardness of AISI 304 type stainless steel material that has gone through the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) method welding process. The main focus of this research is to evaluate how polishing parameters affect surface quality, microstructure appearzmce, and hardness values in the fusion zone, fusion line, and base metal areas. The polishing speeds used were 570 rpm, 750 rpm, and 1043 rpm with polishing times of 5 minutes, l0 minutes, and 15 minutes. Microstructural observations were performed using optical metallography, while hardness testing was performed using the Vickers method. The results of the observations showed that the microstructure consisted of austenite and ferrite phases, with increased grain boundary sharpness as the polishing time increased.'The best results were obtained at a speed of 750 rpm for l5 minutes. The hardness testing showed that the highest hardness value in the fusion zone, 198.35 VHN, was obtained at a speed of 1043 rpm for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, the highest hardness in the fusion line region, 201.15 YI{N, occurred at a speed of 1043 rpm for 15 minutes. The fusion line generally exhibits higher hardness than the base metal, attributed to phase transformation caused by the thermal effects of welding. This study concludes that polishing speed and time significantly influence the microstructure appearance and surface hardness results.
