PENERAPAN PERAWATAN TALI PUSAT TERBUKA PADA ASUHAN KEPERAWATAN BAYI BARU LAHIR POST SECTIO CAESAREA DI RUANG PERSALINAN RSUP DR. MOHAMMAD HOESIN PALEMBANG
Background: Neonates are at high risk of infection, particularly at the umbilical cord site. The umbilical cord is an open wound that can serve as an entry point for tetanus bacteria, potentially leading to sepsis and death. Umbilical cord cutting is a standard procedure following birth; however, post-cutting care is critical to prevent infection in newborns. The dry cord care method—which involves keeping the umbilical cord clean, dry, and uncovered without bandages or antiseptics—has been proven effective in reducing the risk of infection and accelerating the natural detachment of the cord. Objective: Memberikan asuhan keperawatan kepada pasien bayi baru lahir perawatan tali pusat terbuka untuk mencegah terjadinya infeksi. Methods: This study employed a qualitative research design using a case study approach involving three newborn patients post-cesarean section. Discussion: The assessment revealed that the primary complaint in all three patients was the risk of infection. Dry cord care was provided as a non-pharmacological intervention to prevent infection. No signs of infection—such as rubor (redness), calor (warmth), tumor (swelling), or dolor (pain)—were observed around the umbilical area in any of the patients. Dry cord care was found to accelerate the drying and detachment of the umbilical cord in newborns, thereby helping to prevent infection. Conclusion: Dry cord care is effective in preventing umbilical cord infections in newborns following cesarean section. Therefore, it is recommended that more hospitals adopt dry cord care as a non-pharmacological intervention to address the nursing problem of infection risk. Indirectly, dry cord care also promotes faster drying and natural detachment of the umbilical cord, thereby effectively reducing the risk of infection in newborns.
