Microplastics are plastic particles smaller than 5 mm that can easily enter fish bodies and potentially cause adverse effects if accumulated in marine animals or humans through the food chain. This study aims to determine the abundance, types, and sizes of microplastics in the digestive tracts of pelagic and demersal fish sold in Palembang City, South Sumatra. Samples of pelagic and demersal fish were collected from three different markets: Jakabaring Market, Kuto Market, and Lemabang Market. Two types of pelagic fish were sampled: sardines and mackerel, while two types of demersal fish were sampled: white snapper and black snapper. The samples were then taken to the laboratory for preparation, destruction, and identification. The samples were filtered using seven graded sieves and analyzed using an Olympus CX33 microscope at 40x magnification. The results of the study showed that there were four types of microplastics: film, fragments, fibers, and pellets. The film type of microplastic was the most dominant (501 particles), followed by fragments (251 particles), then fibers (196 particles), and the lowest was pellets (9 particles). In pelagic fish, microplastic size dominated the most particles in the 500–1000 μm range, with 111 microplastic particles, and had the highest abundance of 81.7 particles/individual. Meanwhile, demersal fish were dominated by the 50–100 μm size range, with 86 particles, and an abundance of 77.8 particles per individual. Based on market location, the highest number of microplastics was found at Jakabaring Market (355 particles), followed by Kuto Market (311 particles), and the lowest at Lemabang Market (291 particles).
