CULTIVATING CLIMATE CHAMPIONS: AN EXPLORATION OF PROJECT BASED CLIMATE CHANGE EDUCATION IN SECONDARY EFL LEARNING

This study investigates the integration of project-based climate change education (CСE) within secondary English as a Foreign Language (EFL.) classrooms, with an emphasis on its capacity to cultivate climate-conscious leamers while simultancously enhancing language acquisition skills. Project-Based Learning (PBL) is posited as a pedagogically advantageous approach that effectively links language instruction with environmental literacy, thereby promoting critical thinking and collaborative skills in rural educational contexts. Employing a Design-Based Research (DBR) framework, the rescarch involved a sample of 52 ninth-grade students from SMP Negeri 5 Lalan in South Sumatra. The utilization of the ADDIE instructional design model facilitated a comprehensive assessment of the students' initial climate literacy through the administration of surveys and semi-structured interviews, which informed subsequent iterative revisions of the curriculum. The findings of the study reveal significant advancements in both English language proficiency and climate-related knowledge across three instructional phases: awareness, analytical writing, and problem-solving. Students demonstrated a transition from superficial to more sophisticated understandings of climate change phenomena, encompassing critical topics such as global warming, energy conservation, and forest preservation. The thesis ultimately asserts that the integration of project-based CCE into EFL classrooms not only enhances students environmental literacy but also fosters improvements in their English language proficiency. Furthermore, by implementing lowtech, contextually relevant projects, the instructional model effectively addresses resource constraints while simultaneously fostering student engagement, critical thinking skills, and a commitment to sustainable values.
