KARAKTERISASI KATALIS Ni-Mo/HZSM-5 DAN UJI KINERJA PADA HYDROCRACKING CRUDE PALM OIL (CPO) MENJADI BIOFUEL
The increasing demand for energy has driven the development of environmentally friendly alternative energy sources. Crude Palm Oil (CPO), which is abundantly available in Indonesia, can serve as a vegetable oil source for energy conversion and has potential to be transformed into biofuel through hydrocracking. This study aims to evaluate the performance of the Ni-Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst and to examine the effect of hydrocracking reaction temperature on the characteristics of the resulting biofuel. The Ni-Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst was synthesized via the dry impregnation method with a metal loading of 10%, and was characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) to determine crystallinity and crystal size calculated by the Debye-Scherrer equation, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis to evaluate surface area and pore volume, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to observe the morphology of the metal-impregnated HZSM-5 zeolite. Degummed CPO was then subjected to hydrocracking at 300°C, 325°C, and 350°C. Product analysis was performed using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) to identify functional groups in CPO before and after the hydrocracking process. The results showed that after degumming, the density, viscosity, and acid number of CPO decreased, indicating improved oil quality. The crystalline structure of HZSM-5 was preserved after metal impregnation, with crystallinity increasing from 69.37% to 75.94%. The decrease in surface area due to pore blocking by metal was compensated by the formation of active sites that enhanced catalytic activity. FTIR characterization of the biofuel products revealed that a reaction temperature of 350°C led to more complete deoxygenation, as indicated by a reduced C–O absorption band intensity. Overall, the Ni-Mo/HZSM-5 catalyst was effective in converting CPO into biofuel via hydrocracking, with the best performance observed at a reaction temperature of 350°C.
