Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are the most significant contributor to the greenhouse effect. The level of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere before the industrial revolution was 280 ppm which has increased to 424 ppm by November 2024. This research aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by converting carbon dioxide into value-added products, such as cyclic carbonates and hydrogels as carbon capture materials. The carbon dioxide conversion process is carried out through photocatalysis using semiconductor metal oxide catalysts, specifically NiO and Cu2O under UV-A or visible light irradiation for 18 hours. FTIR analysis of the sample without CMC with the addition of epichlorohydrin and NiO catalyst found absorption bands at 1811 cm-1 and 1736 cm-1 indicating the presence of carbonyl groups, while the 1H-NMR spectrum at δH 4.83 ppm indicated the proton signal of the product with the formation of cyclic carbonate, where the achieved conversion efficiency value was 3.85%. In addition, the success of the synthesis was shown by the CMC sample with the addition of epichlorohydrin and Cu2O catalyst with FTIR analysis found a broad absorption band at 3100-3700 cm-1 indicating the presence of hydroxyl groups (-OH) which is consistent with the formation of the product. A new peak appeared around 1550-1750 cm-1 indicating successful cross-linking between epichlorohydrin and carboxymethyl cellulose, confirming the formation of hydrogels.
