FENOMENA CULTURE SHOCK PADA PESERTA PERTUKARAN MAHASISWA MERDEKA (PMM) DI UNIVERSITAS SRIWIJAYA TAHUN 2023
One of the Merdeka Learning Campus programs is the Merdeka Student Exchange (PMM) which provides students with the opportunity to study in a new environment for one semester. However, the phenomenon of culture shock is often experienced by PMM participants who experience significant cultural differences because PMM participants at Sriwijaya University come from outside Sumatra Island. Therefore, research on the impact of culture shock on PMM participants is very important to improve their experience and success in this program. This research aims to dig deeper into the phenomenon of culture shock experienced by PMM participants at Sriwijaya University with a descriptive qualitative method involving data collection techniques such as in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation studies using Kalvero Oberg's theory of culture shock. The results showed that PMM participants went through four stages in experiencing culture shock, namely the euphoria stage, crisis stage, adjustment stage, and acceptance stage. Each informant has a different period of time in experiencing each stage due to differences in experience and how each informant adjusts. Some informants experience culture shock intensely and quickly because they are not used to significant cultural differences. Others feel more adaptable because they have a better understanding of cultural dynamics and the ability to change their mindset and behavior according to the new environment. From these findings, it is suggested that a deeper understanding of the new culture can significantly contribute to reducing the negative impact of culture shock on PMM participants.
