This study is titled The Representation of Beauty Standards in the 2021 Korean Drama Shadow Beauty (A Semiotic Analysis of Roland Barthes). The purpose of this research is to examine how beauty standards are represented in the 2021 Korean drama Shadow Beauty. The approach used is qualitative with a semiotic analysis method based on Roland Barthes’ model, which includes denotation, connotation, and myth. The research object consists of scenes in the drama that portray beauty standards. Data were collected through documentation and visual observation of narratives, characters, and visual symbols in the drama. Roland Barthes' semiotic theory is applied to explore how visual signs construct meaning and create myths about beauty standards in society. The results show that Shadow Beauty represents beauty standards through the myth of ideal beauty, which emphasizes fair skin, slim body, and symmetrical facial features. These representations indirectly marginalize characters who do not meet such standards. The representation constructs the meaning that beauty is a primary condition for social acceptance, particularly among teenage girls.
