EFEKTIVITAS EKSTRAK ETANOL DAUN JAMBU BIJI MERAH TERHADAP PENURUNAN KADAR VSCS DI SMA SRIJAYA NEGARA
Background: Halitosis is an unpleasant odor from the oral cavity caused mainly by Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs), the result of the activity of anaerobic gram-negative bacteria. Reducing VSCs levels can be achieved by reducing the activity and number of VSCs-producing bacteria, one of which is through the use of mouthwash containing antibacterial compounds. Red guava leaves are known to have antibacterial content that has the potential to reduce VSCs levels. Objective: This study aims to determine the effectiveness of ethanol extract of red guava leaves on reducing VSCs levels in Srijaya Negara High School students. Methods: Experimental research with pretest-posttest design with control group. The subjects in this study consisted of 34 subjects who were divided into 2 groups, namely the treatment group who gargled with red guava leaf ethanol extract mouthwash and the control group who gargled with 0,12% chlorhexidine mouthwash. VSCs levels were measured before and after gargling using the Tanita FitScan Breath Checker. Subjects were instructed to gargle 20 ml for 30 seconds. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon test and Mann Whitney test. Results: The results showed that there was a significantly better decrease in Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs) levels in the control group compared to the treatment group (p-value
